Innovation is a term that generally refers to the creation of better or more effective products, processes, technologies, or ideas that affect markets, governments, and society. Innovation is key for any industry and TAPPI is pleased to recognize Companies/Universities/Organizations that are moving the nonwovens industry forward and changing the world we live in through innovation.
The TAPPI NET Division will present the first annual Innovation in Nonwovens Award, during the Keynote Session at the 2011 NETInc Conference, to Dr. Anthony Atala from Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for their work using nonwoven scaffolds for regenerative medicine. Dr. Atala will then discuss his work and provide his view of the future of nonwovens in the medical arena. Anthony Atala, M.D., is Director of the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine and the W.H. Boyce Professor and Chair of Urology at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in North Carolina. His team engineered the first lab-grown organ to be implanted into a human -- a bladder -- and is developing experimental fabrication technology to "print" human tissue on demand. Aside from his ground breaking research, Dr. Atala also tends to clinical and administrative responsibilities. He operates regularly and runs a busy pediatric urology clinic. He is also in charge of a rapidly growing urology department and has been successful in recruiting other renowned faculty to Wake Forest. In 2010, Dr. Atala was number 71 on Fast Company Magazines Top 100 Most Creative People In Business and has been featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show as well as CNN.
